The History of Rugby in America

American rugby was a major sport on many university campuses during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Numerous universities hosted rough-and–ready football games, as the All Blacks visited the United States a number of times. The Princeton Colleges and Rutgers Colleges hosted America’s first such game in 1869. It was a 25-aside game that was played according to the rules of Rugby Union football.

In 1908 and 1909 the All Blacks traveled to America. Tourists were returning from tours in France and England. The American press was impressed and called it the All-Americans contre the All-Blacks. The tour was successful and Takudzwa Ngwenya was awarded the try-of-the-year award.

In 1906, the University of California and Stanford stopped playing football, and instead adopted rugby as their sport. On May 14th 1906, the first American game of this type took place. It was played according to Rugby Union football rules. It was a big success and American universities soon started to play the same game.
